Built in 1965, the Watzek Sports Center suffered a structural failure during a 2021 winter storm, resulting in a roof collapse that underscored the need for significant campus improvements. In response, the 53,000-square-foot gymnasium underwent a comprehensive mass timber renovation and expansion to create a more welcoming and accessible community hub for Reed College. The renovation updated locker rooms, offices, the original entrance, and common areas. At the same time, the new addition featured a two-story basketball gym, fitness rooms, all-user restrooms, and a secondary accessible entrance.
Siegner and Company brought its expertise in wood stains and clear finishes to the project, applying the final finish coat to the mass timber framing, wood roof diaphragm, and vertical CLT shear walls. Additionally, the team successfully removed dark water stains that emerged midway through construction, ensuring the timber’s aesthetic and structural integrity matched the project’s high standards.
